The relationship between lightweight contender Ryan Garcia and four-weight-division champion Canelo Alvarez has soured over the past few weeks.

In a recent interview, Garcia opened up about the rift between him and his former idol.

The Flash‘ appeared on The MMA Hour with host Ariel Helwani.

In conversation, Helwani asked Garcia about his relationship with Alvarez, “And how would you describe the state of your relationship now? Is it non-existent? No communication whatsoever.”

In response, Garcia said, “Nah, I haven’t really talked to him at all.”

Garcia further added that the last time he spoke to Alvarez was after his fight with Caleb Plant.

Notably, Garcia has changed camps ahead of his upcoming fight with Ghanaian boxer Emmanuel Tagoe. He is currently training under trainer Joe Goossen.

What happened between Ryan Garcia and Canelo Alvarez?

Ryan Garcia was a part of trainer Eddy Reynoso’s camp at Alvarez’s San Diego gym.

Alvarez and Garcia shared one of the best ‘brotherhoods’ in boxing. Alvarez mentored the young lightweight. Moreover, Garcia idolized the world champion.

However, Alvarez’s criticism of Garcia was what caused their relationship to sour.

Alvarez spoke about the lightweight contender, saying, “Look, Ryan has a lot of talent. But to me in my eyes, he’s wasting a lot of time and wasting his talent.”

He further added, “I look at him and don’t see him 100 percent dedicated and, to us, that’s a bad signal.”

This was when things changed between the two boxers.

In response, Garcia said, “I don’t lack inspiration. I’m a hungry fighter. I had a hard year.”

In a later interview with DAZN boxing, Garcia mentioned that he wishes to rebuild his relationship with Alvarez.

He said, “I would hope that we could, uh, come back and just be good friends. Because uh, you know that was a special time in my life, obviously.”
