 WBC lightweight interim champion Ryan Garcia is one of the biggest names in the sport. The undefeated American has a global fan base thanks to his skills in the ring and his social media presence.

Garcia passed his first major test in the division when he beat Luke Campbell after a tough fight. Ever since then, rumors have linked him with several big-name fighters. However, he has now settled for Javier Fortuna and the WBC interim lightweight champion has provided a massive update on his next move.

The 21-0 boxer took to his social media to break the news to his fans and followers. He wrote, “Fight contract signed big announcement Tuesday!” Time to do as I do.”

After weeks of calling out Gervonta Davis, ‘KingRy’ announced a fight with legendary boxer Manny Pacquiao. Despite his best efforts to talk that fight into existence, the bout fell through, and he had to search for a new opponent.

Garcia tried to rekindle his rivalry with Davis to make a fight; however, it looked unlikely that ‘Tank’ would agree to a bout. As a result, ‘KingRy’ has had to settle for Javier Fortuna.

Why is Ryan Garcia fighting Javier Fortuna?

In an exciting weight class like the lightweight division, fans would have loved to see two stars take on each other. However, that is seldom the case with a sport that involves so many negotiations. So why is the WBC interim champion fighting a relatively low-profile Fortuna?

Despite not being a big-name fighter like the other champions in the division, Fortuna is a serious challenger to Garcia. The Dominican boxer is a former world champion and has fought tough competition throughout his career.

The 36-2-1 boxer sits at #3 in the WBC rankings. This is the same body in which Garcia is the interim champion. Therefore, by fighting Fortuna, Ryan Garcia would not only challenge himself against a more experienced campaigner, but also solidify his position in the division.
