Sam Maxwell Retains His Title in a 10 Round War

Sam Maxwell successfully defended his WBO European super-lightweight title in a hard-fought battle with Joe Hughes. The fight went the distance, and both boxers were pushed to their limits.

While Maxwell managed to outpoint Hughes on the judge’s scorecards, he had to absorb some legitimate damage throughout the fight. Not to forget, Hughes put up a good fight too.

The contest was alluring from the very beginning. In the first round itself, Maxwell and Hughes landed some significant shots on each other. Yet Hughes had an upper hand as he wobbled the champion for a while with a vicious body shot. That said, Maxwell regained his momentum in some time.

Both the men kept closing the distance and hunted for that perfect shot. But none of them got it. It is safe to say that both boxers are extremely tough. And neither of them wanted to depart the arena without putting on a show.

After some intense primary rounds, Maxwell dominated the pace. He planted clean shots on Hughes and advanced himself on the judges’ cards. Again, Hughes was not ready to give up.

He responded with his own strikes and bruised up the champion’s face badly. It was clear that Maxwell was absorbing some nasty shots too. Despite that, he displayed the heart of a champion and kept going. The complexion of the fight changed as the fight progressed.

Maxwell recorded a comfortable win on paper. The three judges scored the contest 98-92, 97-94, and 97-94 to award Maxwell the win.

The 31-year-old Britisher is still undefeated and the WBO champion of the world. Meanwhile, Hughes is now 17-6-1 in pro boxing. He will need to register a couple of more wins to get back in the title race.
