In the unpredictable sport of boxing, stakes are often high, and every decision can make or break a boxer’s career. Eddie Hearn, a renowned boxing promoter, found himself at a crossroads. Lost in the conundrum, Hearn had to decide if facilitating a rematch for a rising star of female boxing was a good idea. Who is this rising star? Ramla Ali! She is a Somali professional boxer and model.

Back in June this year, Ali went toe to toe with Julissa Alejandra Guzman, a Mexican boxer. The fight resulted in Ali losing via knockout. However, the Somali boxer thirsted for revenge and entered into a rematch. This time around, Ali took the fight to Guzman and secured a unanimous decision win. In a recent interview, Eddie Hearn, Ali’s promoter, shed light on the uncertainty he faced in allowing Ali to face Guzman soon after she tasted her first career defeat at the hands of Guzman.

While speaking to iFL TV, Hearn explained he questioned himself about letting Ali fight in the rematch. Hearn said, “I started thinking this week, did we do the right thing, allowing her to go into the rematch?” The British promoter contemplated that he wanted to arrange competitive fights, but Ali got KOed in her last fight with Guzman. We talk about making sure that fighters are in competitive fights, but she did get knocked out badly in that fight,” said Hearn.

Hearn even revealed that Ali and her team were confident about the win. She was so convinced, their team were convinced they could win the fight,” said Hearn. Later, Hearn asserted that he was happy with the results and happy about taking the leap of faith by praising Ali’s performance. “She did what she probably should have done in the first fight…control a distance, outbox Guzman, she stood and traded at times,” said Hearn.

While Ali defeated the biggest challenger of her career yet, earlier this year, she was named to the 2023 Time Women of the Year list. The list recognizes twelve extraordinary leaders fighting for an equal world. Ali is a UNICEF ambassador who founded the Sisters Club. It’s a non-profit that provides boxing lessons to women who would not have access to the sport otherwise.

The non-profit operates in London and Los Angeles and is trying to start operations in other locations. What’s more, Ali’s recent win against Guzman propelled her name in the boxing world. After Ali’s recent achievement, fans and pundits everywhere are excited to witness what else Ali will achieve in the future.
