Laila Ali was one of the select few people who had managed to follow in the footsteps of her father, Muhammad Ali. She became a professional boxer just like her father and although she couldn’t make the same impact on the sport that her father had; she did leave her mark on it.

However, it wasn’t smooth sailing for the former undefeated champion, as she too had her struggles growing up. Despite being the daughter of one of the most influential people in the world, Laila had to deal with being alone due to her father always being involved in something. She detailed this in an interview back in 2017 after she was asked how she coped with the absence of her parents.

“I did go through my time when I was angry because I was in it. But when I moved out of the household, I was able. My mom is a great person. She’s a beautiful person inside and out, but I see her weakness as a woman. She knows that trust me, that was hard to write that book because I do love my mom and I’m putting her business out there, too. I’m putting my dad’s business out there. I didn’t make a lot of money on that book. It wasn’t for money; that was never the purpose. It was just something that I needed to release, and it really was about me at the time. It was more selfish like, “People need to understand me. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to tell your story too because that’s a part of my story.” she said

However, she then revealed that her mother was not happy with her life being made public. She also stated that despite her mother not being happy, she went on to tell her story anyway. “My mom was not happy about that book because she was ashamed. I said, “This is going to help.” This is a young girl telling her mom. Mom, this is going to help more people than its going to hurt. I’m sorry, but you made your bed, you got to lay in it.” I’ve said that to my dad over the years too about certain things. That’s just how I feel. I take responsibility for the things that I do, so that’s for everybody.” She added.
