David Benavidez is still chasing his shot at glory after being denied an opportunity in the super middleweight division by Canelo Alvarez. As Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev get ready to square off for their rubber match, Jose Benavidez Sr. has sent a clear message to both boxers.
For over a year, ‘The Mexican Monster’ remained the interim WBC super middleweight champion, yet he couldn’t land a title fight against Canelo Alvarez. This forced the 28-year-old to move up to light heavyweight to look for better fights. After defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk, he secured the WBC interim title, and did the same to David Morrell to get the WBA (Regular) strap. Now, Benavidez is vying for the undisputed crown! Earlier this year, the WBC ordered Bivol to defend his title against Benavidez, but Bivol chose to fight Beterbiev in the trilogy instead. This resulted in Benavidez being elevated to the full version of the title. However, Team Benavidez isn’t content with it.
While appearing in an interview with Fight Hype recently, Benavidez’s father/trainer, Jose Benavidez Sr., made their intentions clear. “I would hope so. I’m not discarding that,” he said when asked whether his son intends to fight the winner of the Bivol vs. Beterbiev trilogy. “Like I said, we want to face the monsters of the division, and I believe that Beterbiev and Bivol are the monsters, so we want to fight either or.”

“I heard they were going to take a fight in between that, so I thought, ‘Hey, let’s fight one guy. The winner of that—fights the other guy. But I don’t think there’s a lot of interest in there, facing the ‘Mexican Monster,’” Benavidez Sr. continued. “So we’re just going to keep our fingers crossed and hopefully that fight happens with Beterbiev and Bivol.”

It’s also worth mentioning that there were some speculations that Benavidez might want to fight interim WBO light heavyweight champion Callum Smith in the interim to make his claim at undisputed even stronger. But that fight doesn’t seem to be happening quite yet. Regardless, Canelo Alvarez still seems to be in Team Benavidez’s mind.

Jose Benavidez Sr. says David Benavidez would send Canelo Alvarez to a hospital
After failing to secure a fight against Canelo Alvarez, Benavidez Sr. isn’t the biggest fan of the 34-year-old. When discussing the fight between Terence Crawford and the Mexican superstar, Benavidez Sr. let go of the floodgates to reveal exactly what he thinks of Canelo’s September 13th fight against Crawford.

“I think it’s going to be a boring fight, I am hoping that it’s a little bit exciting. I heard that Canelo [Alvarez] was the worst fight ever on pay-per-view to throw the least punches in history,” Benavidez Sr. told Fight Hub TV. When pressed whether Canelo Alvarez would finally face his son after the Crawford fight, Benavidez Sr. remained blunt.

“He doesn’t want to face David Benavidez,” Benavidez Sr. said. “David Benavidez is a very young fighter. Super young, very strong, he has proven himself to be a top young fighter… one of the best at 168 lbs and one of the best at 175 lbs.” Benavidez Sr. concluded by suggesting that Benavidez vs. Canelo Alvarez would be bad for boxing because his son would “send him to a hospital.”
That said, David Benavidez seems eager to land a shot at the undisputed status, regardless of who he has to fight to get there. But first, Beterbiev and Bivol have to finally settle their debate. Who do you think Benavidez will end up fighting next?
