22-year-old Floyd Schofield kept his flawless record shining after a thrilling clash with Mexico’s Rene Tellez Giron last night. The duo locked horns at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on Saturday, which saw ‘Kid Austin’ pull off a unanimous decision win following 12 rounds of boxing. However, Schofield’s performance fell short of the high standards set by fighters like Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson, and more.

The fight saw Judge Tim Cheatham score the bout 118-109, Judge Patricia Morse Jarman 116-111, and Judge David Sutherland 118-109. But get this. Although Schofield largely maintained in control of the bout, he was rocked in the third round, prompting a warning from referee Thomas Taylor to avoid turning his back mid-fight. Yet, this was only the beginning of the evening’s mishaps.

Floyd Schofield got a scolding from father

As the third round ended, Schofield’s missteps continued. Returning to his corner, he appeared to miss the stool entirely, adding to the tension. During the brief one-minute break, the 22-year-old had little time to recover, instead enduring a stern scolding from his father and trainer, Floyd Schofield Sr.

The lip-lashing from his father had clearly worked, as the 22-year-old stuck to his jab to continue winning rounds, but the championship rounds saw a first for Schofield. A stiff left hook from Giron in the 11th round saw ‘Kid Austin’ crash onto the canvas for the first time in his career. Luckily for Schofield, he beat the count and got back into action.

The 12th round was all action as well, thanks to Giron’s last-ditch efforts to turn the tide in his favor, but Schofield was safe and no further knockdowns came out of it. Moments later, Schofield got hold of the mic during the in-ring interview and called out Shakur Stevenson. “Shakur is not Rene. Shakur [doesn’t have] the power like Rene. He [doesn’t have the] dog in him, so it’s [going to] be a very one-sided fight in my opinion,” he declared.

However, as always, Stevenson, who was tweeting throughout the fight, had a reply at hand for Schofield.

Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis didn’t hold back

After Schofield’s third-round warning from the ref, Stevenson wasted no time on X, tweeting, “He lucky dude ain’t clip his a** when he turned around.” DAZN, sensing the perfect moment to spice things up, tagged Stevenson to the clip with a wink. Stevenson doubled down, calling Schofield “Food!!!” Meanwhile, ‘Kid Austin’ kept it cool, firing back with a casual, “Let’s go 🙂.”

Somewhere else, Lamont Roach poked fun at Schofield for missing his stool in his corner. “That n***a missed the stool 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. That’s [probably] one of the funniest things I [have] seen in boxing,” Roach wrote. Speaking of Roach, his next opponent, Gervonta Davis joined the conversation.

In a couple of tweets, the Baltimore native wrote, “😂😂😂😂😂😂😂head a** and stop letting your father cut ya hair.” He later added, “I’m getting me a bite to eat and I’m hearing @kidaustin11 you getting ya a** kicked bruv.. Tell me it ain’t so. Hit me back asap.. Clear this s**t up.”

Meanwhile, 5-0 boxer from Schofield’s weight class, J’Hon Ingram, also took shots at the 22-year-old. “I’m stopping lil folks😂 he got no chin chin 😂,” wrote Ingram.

Schofield’s Hall of Fame promoter Oscar De La Hoya didn’t seem all too pleased with his performance either. “Me being a fighter myself, I give Floyd a C-minus,” Oscar said. “He’s only 22 years old. There’s no rush whatsoever. He wants to fight all the top guys. But he has to slow down a little bit and go back to the drawing board.”

That being said, while Floyd Schofield managed to get his hand raised after the final bell on Saturday, his peers don’t seem all too impressed by his performance. This should prompt him to get back in the gym before taking on the big names but only will tell what’s next for the lightweight. What did you think of the fight?
