WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez is picking up problems with everybody. While ‘The Takeover’ has had his long-standing issues with two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford, the 27-year-old seems to have also turned on his long-time friend, the two-time undisputed super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez.

You see, before his fight against interim title holder Arnold Barboza Jr. in Times Square on May 2nd, Lopez was supposed to train alongside Canelo Alvarez under the supervision of the 2021 Trainer of the Year recipient Eddy Reynoso. However, due to logistical issues, Reynoso could not train the WBO super lightweight champion. Instead, Reynoso had to stick with his star fighter Canelo Alvarez, who was scheduled to fight William Scull on May 3rd in Riyadh. Lopez had expressed his disappointment about the subject at the time, but now, it appears the 27-year-old has grown frustrated. In a recent Instagram live stream, he was pressed by his fans about who he would support in the Canelo-Crawford fight.

Notably, Canelo and Crawford are supposed to fight in September. Regardless, Lopez, who had previously trained alongside Canelo and supported him, sent a message to Crawford. “I’m gonna go for a Crawford because then… let’s say he beats Canelo, I get ammunition. So when I fight him, I beat Crawford…beat Canelo,” Lopez said.

He further commented about not being able to work with Canelo’s team previously, stating, “The Canelo team [doesn’t] want Teofimo. Not our fault, bro. It’s whatever the champ wants.” Lopez went as far as to criticize Canelo for his last fight against Scull, which received heavy backlash for being boring, as Canelo Alvarez failed to cut off the ring to catch a running Scull.

“I don’t want to be heavy, flatfooted, planted anyway. I’m a boxer. Pretty damn good boxer too,” Lopez said in a sneaky dig at Canelo Alvarez. However, this doesn’t mean Lopez’s feud with Terence Crawford has finally come to a close. In fact, just recently, the pair were at the peak of their animosity.

Terence Crawford gets into a heated exchange with women from ‘Team Teofimo Lopez’

Terence Crawford found himself in a heated confrontation with a female member of Team Teofimo Lopez during the Garcia vs. Romero weigh-ins. In a short viral clip, security can be seen stepping in as tensions flare. Crawford, visibly frustrated, shouted, “Shut up, before someone smacks the s**t out of your dumb a**,” and repeated, “Shut up, b**ch,” before the two were separated.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Teofimo Lopez's loyalty shift to Crawford a smart move or a betrayal of Canelo?

Have an interesting take?

The full context of the argument remains unclear, but the incident suggests lingering animosity between both camps despite an apparent truce earlier this year. In Riyadh, Crawford confronted Lopez over past comments, with Teofimo admitting he was only “doing it for promotion,” prompting ‘Bud’ to declare he no longer needed to “f**k him up.”

This feud originally stemmed from Lopez downplaying Crawford’s resume and making racially charged remarks, including, “Whichever monkey wants to get the banana. They are gorillas. I’m a lion.” Despite all this drama between the two, a fight between them has never even come close to happening.

That said, despite their problems with each other, Teofimo Lopez is ready to support Terence Crawford in the upcoming fight against Canelo Alvarez. This is seemingly because Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, could not work with him. What did you think of Lopez’s last-minute switch?
