Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas trained Mike Tyson during the time he was just a teenager. The pair would see great success together with Tyson even winning two junior Olympic gold medals under his tutelage. While it looked like Atlas would be Iron Mike’s trainer for a long time, their relationship ended on a rather disturbing note.

The two parted ways when Tyson was 15 years old after Altas allegedly held the former heavyweight champion at gunpoint. This was done after Tyson reportedly got into fights in school and threatened his fellow classmates. According to Atlas, this was a way to discipline a reckless Tyson and ensure there were consequences for his actions.

However, it looks like the tension between the two has settled down, as Atlas recently shared a photo of a young Tyson on his Instagram page. In the picture, Iron Mike can be seen having dinner with his former mentor and coach Cus D’Amato, his wife, amateur boxer Frank Manacell, and Altas himself.

In the caption, Atlas described how the environment in D’Amato’s home was similar to his family. He stated that family is not defined by blood but rather by sharing common goals and embarking on the journey to achieve those goals together. “What really makes a family is not always blood, it can be sharing common cares and goals, and the journey to achieve them.” he wrote

Although Atlas left Tyson before he made his professional debut, he still was a part of his adolescence, shaping him into the iconic fighter he would become.

Teddy Atlas recalls holding Mike Tyson at gunpoint

In the ABC documentary Mike Tyson: The Knockout, Atlas revealed the exact reason why he held a 15-year-old Tyson at gunpoint. He claimed that Tyson made inappropriate passes at his sister-in-law and which forced Atlas to take this step. “I knew what I was prepared to do. I was going to kill him if I had to… He saw me coming. I just called him a piece of crap, and I put the gun to his head and I told him that he will never go near anybody in my family again. And I said, ‘You understand?’ I saw that and I stuck the gun in his ear. I started to pull the trigger and at the last second, I pulled it out of his ear. And I fired the gun then he fell on the floor grabbing his ear.” he said.

However, this would not work as well as Atlas would have thought, as Tyson just smirked at him. Given Iron Mike’s history with violence, it might not have been a great idea to intimidate him, even as a teenager.
