After much rigmarole and delay, Teofimo Lopez will finally lace up the boxing gloves to defend his lightweight titles this weekend. He will lock horns with his arch-rival, George Kambosos Jr., at the Madison Square Garden in New York. This fight is extremely vital for Lopez because this will be his first prime title defense at the lightweight frame.
Moreover, the chances of him going up in a weight class or bagging a title unification fight with Devin Haney rely heavily on his Saturday night bout.
Also, Lopez is eager to face his rival Haney, but there’s a catch. Speaking to iFL TV recently, he addressed this juncture and gave an honest notion on how would he like to face Haney.

“We agreed on something, right, I suppose. But the thing is we agreed on making the fight happen. Didn’t say the weight, so for me, 140 is where we can make it,” said ‘The Takeover’.
For the past few months now, Teofimo Lopez and his father, Lopez Sr. have been extremely open to moving up in a weight class. Also, ‘The Takeover’ is eager to get his hands on the undisputed super-lightweight champ, Josh Taylor. However, many feel he still has umpteen battles to finish in the lightweight landscape before he moves up.

Out of all the prospective bouts in contention for Lopez, one fight that stands tall is the Devin Haney fight. As ‘The Dream’ holds the WBC lightweight belt under his wing, it’s important for him and Lopez to lock horns in a title unification fight.

Teofimo Lopez vs Devin Haney – Will this fight really take place at 140-pounds?
While ‘The Takeover’ Teofimo Lopez is assertive about moving up in a weight class, his foe, Devin Haney, hasn’t really opened up on elevating his weight class.

Furthermore, as ‘The Takeover’ seemed firm with his above comments, it didn’t seem like he’ll fight Haney at 135-pounds.

With this, the future of this bout seems in jeopardy. Also, it’s likely that Lopez might announce his move to 140-pounds if he claims a win over George Kambosos Jr. this weekend. What do you make of Lopez’s comments?
