‘The Hurricane Just Took Out the Power’: Puerto Rican Boxers Express Concerns as Country Faces Threat of Flooding Due to Hurricane Fiona

The torrential rainfall caused by the Hurricane Fiona, across Puerto Rico has led to catastrophic flooding in the country. The storm has also wiped out the power supply in most parts of the island, with most of the population remaining without electricity.

Moreover, it was reported that at least two people have died in the chaos with a 58-year-old man dying after being swept away by a river in the town of Comerío. The extreme situation has also led to United States president, Joe Biden, declaring a state of emergency in the country. In this time of uncertainty, Puerto Rican boxers also came together in solidarity and expressed their concerns over this natural disaster.

Amanda Serrano along with other Puerto Rican boxers express concerns over hurricane Fiona

Unified featherweight champion, Amanda Serrano, took to social media and shared her prayers with everyone in the country. She stated that the country is experiencing storm season and hoped that everyone came out safe after this ended.

Moreover, Puerto Rico’s most touted young boxer, Xander Yarob Zayas Castro, also shared his views on the disaster. He claimed that although his country was amidst a crisis, the people were strong and stood up to any threat put in front of them.

He said, “Puerto Rico. My town suffers again the envate of the nature, but if something we know how to do it is to stand up no matter how strong the blow is. I hope to be home as soon as possible helping my people in any way I can.” [Translated via Google]

Lastly, another Puerto Rican star boxer, Edgar Berlanga Jr, whose cousin is in the country also posted about his situation. He stated that although the power supply was cut off, there was still water left. He also shared his prayers for the people affected.

This is the second time in five years that the island has been hit by a hurricane. Back in 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by hurricane Maria, which was the most devastating in the island’s history.

This certainly has been a hard few weeks for the citizens of the island, who witnessed nature’s devastation firsthand. However, the people in the country are strong-willed as shown by the athletes who stood with their countrymen even during the toughest of times.
