The Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia fight was exciting, exhilarating, and everything else a legendary bout should be called. However, the fight seems to have kick-started a new era for some, where the best fight the best. Earlier today, Nico Ali Walsh hopped on social media, reacting to last Saturday night’s upset loss for Devin Haney.

After months of anticipation, Garcia and Haney entered the ring at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Defying all the odds, ‘King Ry’ dominated the former undisputed champion, albeit one judge saw the fight as a draw, producing a majority decision win for Garcia. While most people were reeling from Garcia’s troll of the century, Muhammad Ali’s grandson roped in Floyd Mayweather

Ryan Garcia’s tweets had led everyone to believe that he wasn’t taking the fight seriously. But he completely contradicted that by delivering an exceptional performance against Haney. So, after the unforeseen loss, Haney wrote on X, “[I] fought like a true champion. Got up off the canvas & kept fighting. I am 100% ok & would love to do it again while we both make weight.”

Seeing this, Nico Ali Walsh shared Haney’s tweet on his Instagram story while giving his two cents on what he sees as a monumental moment in the sport. Ali’s grandson wrote, “The Mayweather undefeated era of boxing is over. Everyone’s fighting the best. Love to see it.” Walsh’s praise rings especially true in light of Haney’s steadfast determination to persevere in the fight, even in the face of Garcia’s disregard for the agreed-upon weight limit.

Ahead of the fight on Saturday, Garcia showed for the final weigh-ins, 3.2lbs heavier than the stipulated limit. Though it made Haney $1.5 million, as per the duo’s bet, Haney decided to let the show go on. He went as far as to say that he would beat Garcia regardless of his weight. Garcia, of course, lost the opportunity to take Haney’s WBC super lightweight belt. In the meantime, Walsh wasn’t the only one who expressed his thoughts about the fight on social media.

The Saturday night fight had a lot of firsts for Devin Haney! He suffered his first career loss—he was knocked down for the first time in his career, three times to be exact. However, Caleb Plant thinks a loss isn’t a big deal. Turning to X the next day, Caleb roped in Roberto Durán to explain his case.

Plant wrote, “We [have to] stop acting like a loss means a fighter sucks, though. Y’all miss the golden era where everyone fought everyone but back then ALL great fighters had losses, had been stopped (Duran QUIT in the middle of a FIGHT, does he sucks?). S/O to both for making it a great night.”

With that said, even though the fight didn’t go down as Devin Haney would have liked, he seems to have gained massive respect from the fans. However, it’s hard to say whether other fighters will follow Ryan Garcia and Haney’s example to fight the best, especially at the risk of losing their zero. What did you think about the Saturday night showdown?
