Despite testing positive for banned substance phentermine, the WBC featherweight champion, Oscar Valdez, isn’t really in trouble. He will still defend his belt against Robson Conceicao on Sept 10 in an ESPN PPV. Neither Pascua Yaqui Tribe Athletic Commission nor WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has imposed any major punishment on their champion.
However, Valdez has constantly justified himself to the fans. He released an official statement right after ESPN broke the news. It didn’t set him free from criticisms, though. That said, even if he wins his next fight, critics can still look down at him.

Valdez, preparing for his first title defense, hasn’t stopped explaining his medical setback. Following an official statement, he has connected with the media once again to reveal more insights from his latest fight camp.
Oscar Valdez told Mark Kriegel, “We’ve literally never done anything different as far as taking other supplements. The only difference is that I have taken herbal tea… I was taking several types of teas. I gave up coffee a while back and I started taking more herbal teas. And just trying different types of teas was the only difference that I have done in this training camp, and that’s one of the reasons why I think that’s possibility it.”
Oscar Valdez explained why he believes an herbal tea may be the reason he tested positive for phentermine.

Losing the fight can bring him a dooming misfortune. The Mexican prodigy is 29-0 as a professional with 23 KOs to his name. And surging star ‘Nino’ Conceicao isn’t the biggest name in his resume. So Valdez cannot afford to lose, especially with the latest revelations of his medical condition.
