Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm reached the pinnacle of MMA following her victory over Ronda Rousey. However, what is little known is that Holm was also an accomplished boxer before transitioning into MMA, where she also cemented her legacy.

Back in 2011, “The Preacher’s Daughter’ was at top of her game, much like her rival, Rousey, with only one loss on her record. Despite that, she suffered the same fate as ‘Rowdy’, as she got brutally knocked out in a title bout.

Following this, Mathis unleashed two brutal punches knocking Holm out cold and sending her through the ropes and partially outside the ring.

According to many, the fight should not have continued given Holm’s condition. In addition, the fans were quick to slam the referee and the former UFC champ’s corner as well for their lack of consideration.

Fans slam referee for letting Holm get beaten badly

One fan expressed his anger towards the referee for not stopping the fight early. “Bad referees like this really make me mad,” they wrote.

Another fan claimed that he was hoping for the referee to stop the fight when Holm was entangled. However, he couldn’t understand why the referee would continue the match. “Bruh, I thought he was stopping it when she was tangled in the ropes LIFELESS…..but he just let it keep going for some reason,” they wrote.

Moreover, a fan wondered why Holm’s corner didn’t throw in the towel. “Why wasn’t the towel thrown?” they wrote.

Lastly, one fan stated that the referee shouldn’t be allowed to officiate any other bout after this debacle. “He should never be allowed to referee again!” they wrote.

The majority of the blame for this controversial stoppage can be attributed to the referee. Meanwhile, Holm’s corner is also blamed as they weren’t fully aware of their own fighter’s condition. Despite this devastating experience, Holm would avenge this loss and would not lose a boxing match following this. She then left the sport for the UFC where she became a champion as well.
