‘They Didn’t Think Two Women Can Fight Like That’: Christy Martin Looks Back at Her Iconic Fight on Mike Tyson’s Undercard

The undisputed Lightweight stalwart, Katie Taylor, is all set for a showdown against the unified featherweight Champ, Amanda Serrano. Surely, the greatest battle for women’s boxing history will take place on April 30, in Madison Square Garden. Boxing stalwarts from all around the globe are expressing their opinion on the much-awaited slugfest. Moreover, Christy Martin, former super welterweight, is also among them.

In the show, Behind The Gloves ‘The Coal Miner’s Daughter‘ shared her thoughts on Katie vs Amanda‘s fight. However, while expressing herself, she recalled the good old days. In 1996, she fought in the undercard of epic Mike Tyson vs Bruce Seldon heavyweight title clash in Las Vegas.

Martin said, “We put on a great show with Mike Tyson from Las Vegas. Just surprised a lot of people, they didn’t think two women can fight like that.” 

Notably, Martin is one of the skilled technicians in women’s boxing history, who stepped inside the ring. She is among those names that revolutionized Women’s boxing to the extent that she became the first female boxer to be shown live on national TV in the United States.

‘The Coal Mine’s Daughter’ faced The Irish pugilist, Deirdre Gogarty, in an epic battle of six rounds. It was a special attraction because both fighters exchanged heavy leather and there was no title involved. This epic bout brought female boxing on the map and female boxers respect in the sport as it was the first female slugfest in the ring that was live on TV.

Later on, this fight was on the cover page of magazines and newspapers. It made both fighters overnight stars. As it engaged a genuine crowd, that was shocked later.

Both fighters showcased warrior spirit. In the first round, Gogarty thrashed Martin with the straight combination. However, Martin made a comeback and knocked Gogarty down with the heavy left hook. Finally, Martin won the fight via unanimous decision as her blows were well crafted and landed with accuracy.

Notably, Martin recalled her fight to tell the audience that women boxers could also showcase a tough battle and pull the crowd. She claimed that fight between Katie and Amanda will turn into a high-profile bout as both the pugilists are the best female technicians in the world.
