After a long spell of inactivity, Jack Catterall is making the headlines as he will share the ring with Josh Taylor later this week. It could be his time to shine and enter a phase where he invites up-and-coming youngsters to help him prepare for his fights.

The Brit had his spell of being part of training camps for elite champions like Floyd Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez, Amir Khan, and Kell Brook. He shed light on two of those camps (the ones with ‘Money‘ and Saul).

In a chat with ESPN‘s Nick Parkinson, he said, “I turned pro at 19 without the amateur experience of fighting in different countries so I had to learn from sparring champions like Amir Khan, Kell Brook, Floyd, Canelo, and others. I must have been in my 20s when I stepped into the gym in Vegas to spar Floyd and it was hard because there were hundreds of people there, all with their phones out and making a lot of noise.”

“But I kept being invited back and I soaked up every bit of experience sparring with such a great champion. I did about six weeks of sparring, I was one of ten sparring partners there three times a week for the Pacquiao fight. Some of the rounds were seven or eight minutes long and they don’t call it the ‘Dog House’ for nothing!”

While he soaked up the experience, ‘El Gato’ claimed that his time with Alvarez, who was training to box Jack Kirkland, helped him learn more.

According to Jack Catterall, “It was Canelo’s final few weeks of prep and I took more from that experience because the gym was quieter and Canelo felt massive in the ring, it brought my development on more.”

‘The Tartan Tornado’, who secured a blistering victory over Jose Ramirez in 2021, will be Catterall’s toughest foe. Although the Scot has fought fewer bouts than ‘El Gato’, he has faced more champions. Ring rust will also be a factor, as Catterall hasn’t fought since 2020.
