Boxing legend Mike Tyson knows the struggles of growing up in a tough neighborhood perfectly well. The Bronx native often got into street fights in a neighborhood surrounded by crime and violence. Thus, it was no surprise when he wanted to know about Emmy-nominated actress and Hotboxin’ co-host Leslie Jones about her childhood in Crenshaw.

The West side of Los Angeles where Jones grew was plagued with similar problems as Bron. However, stars like Serena Willams and Dr. Dre would find their way out of this, as Jones detailed her childhood. “motherfu***rs wasn’t shooting each other. They was like seriously fighting like it was a fight like, you were meeting places and fighting, but most of the time that neighborhood was their neighborhood,” she said.

Moreover, she added that her parents didn’t allow her to leave home after she received her basketball scholarship.”So when I was I had a scholarship and everybody found out I had a basketball scholarship there was no staying out late. They saw me somewhere they would make me go home.”

Lastly, she revealed that others who managed to succeed in that neighborhood like Dr. Dre, Serena, and Venus Williams were also pursuing their careers despite the tough surroundings and that families did not want them to get caught up in the violence.

Like it’s Serena and Venus was uh in that little tennis court that was up in the Linwood Park. Dr. Dre came over to the um we called it the mother ship. It’s a big gazebo in Linwood Park sometimes he would DJ there So it was just like I mean you didn’t want your people to be gangsters because they was just always in trouble,” said Jones.
