“This Could Easily Be Abused”: AI Judging Causes Uproar in Boxing World

Unlike other sports, boxing’s judging system is very complicated. Though there are rules made to score the punches, the absence of fair boundaries has led to several controversial decisions in the past. And it is not something that came up in recent times. Since the sport gained popularity in modern times, its judging system is facing backlash. Not a year passes without boxing critics and fans dragging the judges into the witness box. The main event bout between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall suffered a similar fate. Every highly competitive match ends with a similar controversy. The winner claims he earned it and the one who losses by a small margin take no time in blaming the judges for the loss. Despite this, the sport is still relying on the same process. The reason is clear, we don’t have an alternative to it. But it seems that these excuses will soon be outdated because AI judging of sporting events is likely to take the world by storm soon.
Modern technology is developing an unbiased and trustworthy system that would deliver the most efficient scorers in the fight. A glimpse of it recently appeared on the Internet. A social media influencer named KEEM reported about this system on Twitter. He shared a clip showing how it would work and wrote, “AI Boxing Tracker in development! Could replace bad judges in future.”

The user’s caption contained the term “bad judges”, to highlight the several decisions poor decisions made in the past that saw the sheer abuse of the current scoring system. As per ABC, a report found evidence of corruption and manipulation at the Rio Olympics. No doubt such things destroy the credibility of the sport. They are nothing less than a scar on the face of the sport.
When fans came across this new update on social media, they rushed in with comments and reactions. Overall, the AI system drew a mixed reaction.
How did fans react to the talks of the AI judging system?
A fan wrote, “This could easily be abused and worked around, I doubt it will be implemented.”

@ChrisDoStuff why have they not been utilising this for years. If the technology already exists

Pretty amazing, with sensors in the gloves to detect impact and strength of impact could change the point system all together. eg, medium hit, full hit… etc etc

Yeah right. Vegas would never let that happened , look at baseball, basketball and football always bad call

Nah that ain’t right, there are different types of shots that when they land score more then others, if they do it by punch to punch ratios, it would be inaccurate, some punches that land but don’t land flush or just graze a fighter should be counted the same as a clean punch
