Boxing as a sport has seen its fair share of variations since its inception. There have been many events with unusual stipulations ranging from bare knuckle fights to backyard fights with proper promotions conducting these events. However, there are some stipulations that take things to a whole new level. This is exactly the case with ‘underwater boxing’ which seems to be the latest edition of unusual stipulations. The rules of this are similar to boxing with the main difference being that fights will be conducted underwater.
The bouts are usually one minute long with fighters allowed to regain their breath. Moreover, the fights will be conducted over three rounds with a winner eventually being crowned. However, some photos of a fight with this stipulation drew in some wild reactions from fans seeing this sort for the first time.

Photos of some fights taking place under this stipulation made rounds on the internet with female fighters taking part in the events. In the photos, the fighters can be seen trading blows inside an underwater ring, with proper equipment, except a headgear. These fights were popularized by the reality show ‘Underwater Action’ where models train in underwater tasks to win a prize.
The boxing matches were part of other activities which also took place inside water. In addition, the weird boxing match also drew in some wild reactions from fans who were awestruck by this gimmick.

Fans react to underwater matches
One fan stated that he read the caption as ‘underwear boxing’. However, he added that this could be useful for them outside the water. “I read ‘boxing underwear’ but this could probably help them move faster out of water right?” they wrote.
Another fan asked about the fighter’s endurance performing underwater. “How’s their breathing,” they wrote.
A fan even claimed this was how he fought in his dreams. “How it feels like when I fight in my dream,” he wrote.
Lastly, one fan pointed out the dangers of underwater as fighters could get punched while holding their breaths. “For 2 minute underwater imagine …. u have to hold ur breath n u got punch. This game is dangerous,” they wrote.

The fans were surprised to see this unusual take on their favorite sport. While it is not uncommon to see fighters training underwater to improve their conditioning, with Muhammad Ali being the best example of this, competing underwater is something that poses a far greater risk. Despite this, athletes still continue to compete in these stipulations for one reason or another.
