British heavyweight Joe Joyce put up a show last weekend by stopping Carlos Takam in Round 6. Despite the clean referee stoppage, Takam was aggressive and was definitely not an easy opponent for the Englishman.

Tyson Fury’s ex-coach Ben Davison was in attendance at the SSE Arena on Saturday, who had a contrarian opinion on Joyce’s performance against Takam.

In an interview, trainer Ben Davison shared his thoughts on Joe Joyce possibly facing his former sparring partner Anthony Joshua next. He believes the heavyweight champion could be a real problem for him.

Joshua will be a tough fight for Joe. he can’t afford to get hit as clean as that. Listen, anyone can get stopped, it can happen. You know, we’ve seen some of the toughest guys from other weight classes, they get stopped.

“You can’t afford to get hit that often, that clean by Anthony Joshua. But again, he said this going into the Dubois fight and it was a better performance from Joe.

“I don’t think it was the same Joe was there tonight, but like I say, lower opponent bit complacency maybe,” said Ben Davison.

Can Joe Joyce get past Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk?

Cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk now has his eyes set on the heavyweight throne and he is a tough challenge for Anthony Joshua. ‘The Cat Olek’ has incredible footwork, movement, defense and knows when to turn up his striking momentum.

These are traits that most heavyweights do not possess. Usyk’s overall game plan has helped him outpoint, outscore and outsmart his two heavyweight challengers- Chazz Witherspoon and Dereck Chisora.

Anthony Joshua has been the unified heavyweight world champion for a while now. He has a great understanding of the game, possesses world-class movement, superior defense, and packs a punch.

Only Andy Ruiz has made it past Anthony Joshua once but the Englishman went back to the drawing board and redeemed his loss in the rematch.

Both heavyweights have showcased excellent techniques throughout their careers. This begs the question, is Joe Joyce ready to take on either Joshua or Usyk?

It looks like Joe Joyce could be WBO’s next mandatory challenger for the heavyweight throne against the winner of Usyk-Joshua in September. Judging by his performance on Saturday, Joyce is a tough nut to crack inside the ring.

Carlos Takam landed haymakers on ‘The Juggernaut’ but he simply ate all of his shots. Until the end of the fight, the British boxer was eating major shots from Takam. He was also returning effective combinations that ultimately stopped his opponent.

It seemed as if Joe Joyce relied on three key strengths in the fight- durability, ability to endure pain, and knockout power. But his lack of defense against Takam was evident as he dropped his guard often to land big shots.

Ben Davison identified this loophole in Joe Joyce’s game on Saturday. He also pointed out that his performance against Daniel Dubois was better in comparison.
