Tyson Fury was given the ultimatum by WBC to formally announce his retirement. And in turn, also address the situation with his WBC heavyweight title. However, the WBC later gave him an extension of two weeks to make his decision. In a recent tweet, it was revealed that the day has finally come for Fury to take a call on his retirement.

On August 13, 2022, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced that ‘The Gypsy King‘ was given two weeks (until August 26) to confirm his retirement in writing. That was when the Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk fight was the center of attention.

Usyk was defending the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles while also fighting for the vacant The Ring heavyweight title.

And, Sulaiman wished to make a decision about the WBC heavyweight title as well. Notably, Fury had previously also vacated his The Ring heavyweight title post his retirement.

Unfortunately, the Fury family suffered a personal tragedy on August 21, 2022. It was reported that Fury’s cousin, Rico Burton was killed in a knife attack outside a bar in Machester.

In solidarity with Fury, the WBC gave further him an extension of one week (till September 1)  to make a decision about his status as a heavyweight. Meanwhile, it was reported that Fury had in fact informed WBC that he wishes to resume his boxing career.

Canelo Alvarez predicts the outcome of Oleksandr Usyk vs Tyson Fury

While it seems certain that Tyson Fury wishes to make a return. It is also worth mentioning that he is still one of the most formidable heavyweights today. In fact, Super-Middleweight King Canelo Alvarez gave an insight into how a Fury vs Usyk showdown will turn out.

Alvarez was in conversation with  Michelle Joy Phelps of ‘Behind the Gloves.’ Talking about the potential showdown, he said, “Usyk is a really great fighter, good fighter, I saw him a long time ago. And he’s a great fighter with a lot of skills, but I think Fury have everything way, have boxing skills.”

Alvarez even mentioned that Usyk will have a very hard time trying to beat ‘The Gypsy King’.
