The WBC and Lineal heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, sat down for an interview ahead of his fight against Dillian Whyte. This would be ‘The Gypsy King’s homecoming, as it would be the first time since his win against Francesco Pianeta in August 2018.

In the interview with BT Sport Boxing, Fury addressed a wide array of issues from his preparation for Wembley to the demeanor of today’s boxers during the fight week.

Tyson Fury addresses his disappointment in current fighters

Known for his hilarious antics at his press conferences, Tyson Fury was asked about the aggression displayed by fighters during their press conferences. Fury dejectedly replied, “It’s what boxers do, they stand up, they look each other in the face, they get head to head, it’s all the old cliche.”

He further explained the reason he believes fighters act in this manner. According to Fury, today’s fighters lack the ability to talk due to which they resort to grabbing their opponent’s t-shirt. They believe it will outsell the fight, but the reality is completely different.

Incidents like the infamous face-off between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Abel Trujillo at UFC 160 highlight the undefeated champion’s concerns. During which, Khabib lost his cool and shoved Abel away. Similarly, Khabib’s rival, Conor McGregor, is known for his aggression during face-offs. The Irishman once picked up a chair to smack his opponent, Eddie Alvarez, at the UFC 205 press conference.

More recently, in the boxing world, Canelo Alvarez traded punches with Caleb Plant at their pre-fight press conference.

How can this issue be resolved?

Following his dismay, the 33-year-old Brit proposed solutions to stop fighters from acting “childish” in press conferences.

He suggested, “I actually think that fighters should have a massive sanction out on them by the boards when they start acting up on out there at the press conferences and the weigh-ins, grabbing each other by the throats for no intention for actually doing anything.”

Fury believes it’s out of order that the professional sport of boxing has a place for such childish behavior.
