The lightweight division in boxing currently holds the best talents in boxing. The stacked division includes young prospects like Vasyl Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis, and Devin Haney, all of whom have the potential to go down as all-time greats.

However, as has been the case with boxing, we might not get to see these talents face each other. This was certainly the case when Top Rank CEO and Tyson Fury’s promoter Bob Arum dismissed a potential fight between Lomachenko and Davis back in 2019.

Arum immediately turned down the reporter and told him to ask Floyd Mayweather about this.” Ask Floyd Mayweather. He said that the kid isn’t ready for a fight. Floyd Mayweather is his promoter. Floyd Mayweather, if anybody, knows about boxing,” he said.

Moreover, Arum also claimed that a question like this should be put in front of Mayweather if his fighter is ready to take on the likes of Lomachenko, “Question of whether Gervonta Davis is ready to fight a master like Loma should be put to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Let him answer that question. Don’t ask stupid stuff about Gervonta Davis.” He added.

Lomachenko also joined in on this dig and hilariously claimed that Davis was the best fighter on Twitter.  ” I think Gervonta Davis is the best of the best fighter in Twitter.” said Lomachenko

This was back in 2019 when Davis was relatively a new prospect in the division, while the Ukrainian boxer was the champion during this time. However, things have changed drastically since then as Lomachenko would go on to lose his titles, while Tank established himself as one of the best boxers in the division.

Can Gervonta Davis vs Vasyl Lomachenko happen in the future?

Both fighters are highly touted as the best in their division. Davis has an undefeated record of 27-0 with 25 KO wins. Moreover, he made quick work of Rolly Romero in his last fight, knocking him out in the second round. Tank has been called out multiple times by his rival Ryan Garcia, but does not seem too keen on that fight.

On the other hand, Lomachenko has not competed in the ring since beating Richard Comely back in 2021. He was called back to Ukraine to serve his country during their conflict with Russia. However, he has returned to the United States and could soon be back in the ring. A fight with Davis could very well be on the table if Davis does not decide to face Garcia.
