WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson just got told ‘what’s what’ by the father of rising star Floyd Schofield Jr. You see, the Newark native was due to fight his mandatory challenger William Zepeda in early 2025, something he was looking forward to. The duo was said to be part of the huge February 22nd card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
However, call it fate or call it destiny, Zepeda later confirmed that he won’t be fighting Stevenson, as he sustained an injury on his left forearm during his fight against Tevin Farmer earlier this month, which he won via split decision. Since this update, rumors have been floating around, as they do, about someone else subbing in.
Rumors suggested Zepeda’s promotional stablemate Floyd Schofield Jr. was jumping in to replace the Mexican against Stevenson. The 22-year-old recently defeated Rene Tellez Giron and was quick to make a claim towards a world championship title. This fire of the rumors was stocked further when Stevenson and Schofield started trading words on social media.

Meanwhile, Stevenson’s promoter and Matchroom Boxing honcho, Eddie Hearn, confirmed that talks of a fight between them with Schofield’s promoter Golden Boy Promotions were underway for the fight to potentially land on the February card. This somehow angered Oscar De La Hoya who used some choice words to hit out at Stevenson and Hearn. After which Stevenson too, decided to reciprocate and slam De La Hoya and Schofield Jr for calling him out. As all this went down, Floyd Schofield Sr. has now taken to social media to hit back at Stevenson fans.
You see, some suggest Stevenson would be too much for Schofield, so Papa Schofield promptly brought up Stevenson’s past nightmare while explaining why Stevenson is not that great of a boxer. “Who did Shakur fight that made him elite?” Schofield Sr. asked in a video shared by Fight Hub TV. “I’ll wait because he lost in the Olympics. And look at the quality of [the] opponent he lost to. Up there crying like a little girl after he lost.”

It’s worth noting that Stevenson suffered a loss to Robeisy Ramírez of Cuba during the 2016 Summer Olympics. The emotional aftermath of that defeat, with clips of Stevenson sobbing bitterly, remains vivid in the minds of boxing enthusiasts. Nevertheless, Schofield Sr. remarked, “Top Rank developed him strategically, getting him people he could beat up on. And he couldn’t even beat up on them. He was running and everything else against C-level fighters.”
“He ain’t no Tank Davis. He ain’t knock his s**t out… He’d been bluffing his whole f**king career. He got off a lost cry. Got signed getting good paydays to fight cab drivers. And I put up his record so y’all can look, y’all can tag me and let me know. Who did he fight that made him A-level?”
While Schofield Sr. is ranting about why Stevenson is not a great fighter, Oscar De La Hoya has criticized Eddie Hearn for trying to make a fight between them.

Shakur Stevenson holds up a mirror to Floyd Schofield Jr. & Oscar De La Hoya
After Hearn confirmed talks for a fight between the two parties are underway, Oscar De La Hoya released his ‘Clapback Thursday.’ He criticized Hearn for attempting to make the highly experienced Shakur Stevenson’s first fight under the Matchroom Boxing banner against a 22-year-old prospect with no world championship experience.
Stevenson quickly caught wind of the video and showed the reality in expectations between Schofield and his own promoter, Oscar. “Exactly @KidAustin11 Talk super big online but look at your own promoter!!! Dawg y’all sad.. And I sent that to your punk a** prospect because he talk as if he’s Elite tell that bench player stop speaking like a starter @OscarDeLaHoya and stay in a child’s place,” Stevenson wrote on X.

That being said, it appears even though Floyd Schofield Sr. thinks his son would defeat Shakur Stevenson, their promoter doesn’t have much confidence in him. Regardless, it’s yet to be seen what’s next in the cards for these two fighters, who are ready to exchange blows. Who do you think will win?
