Highly rated welterweight Vergil Ortiz Jr seems to be ready to make his first main event appearance. The undefeated American has slowly risen as one of the best challengers in the division. It now appears as though he will take the next step towards stardom.

Reports suggest that he will take on more experienced Maurice Hooker as the main event on a DAZN card. Furthermore, they claim that the event is set for March 27, 2021. This will mark the first time that Ortiz Jr will be headlining an event.

Mike Coppinger from the Athletic was quick to pick up on Steve Kim’s reports. The reports suggested that this fight was in advanced discussions to be the main event. They report the tentative venue to be Dallas since both fighters hail from the city.

However, given that it is a DAZN card, we can be sure that if they confirm this fight, a few more big names added to the card. The fight will be a major step forward for the 2019 prospect of the year with Hooker being the perfect opposition, to take the next step in the division.

This fight could go either way. Ortiz Jr clearly has the power but has never featured in the big fights. While Maurice Hooker has only ever lost once and has been in title fights in his career. Therefore, this makes it an interesting fight, one that could surprise a lot of fans.
