The sport of boxing has never been free from allegations regarding picking fighters for a fight. Numerous boxers and promoters have faced fingers pointed at them for choosing easy fights or having their promoters pick their opponents. And recently, one such promoter has been on the receiving end of these allegations. Five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr‘s former promoter, Al Haymon.

A veteran reporter has put forward some bold thoughts against Haymon and called him out for choosing easy fights for fighters under his promotion and ensuring that they fight the boxer against whom they can easily win. Sports reporter Max Kellerman made strong claims against the PBC owner and did not hesitate to take jabs at him.

Kellerman’s claims against Al Haymon

ESPN reporter Kellerman discussed Haymon and how the 68-year-old promoter chooses fights for boxers under his promotion. On an episode of Max On Boxing, with former champion Tim Bradley on the show, Kellerman painted a picture for the viewers of a rather unsettling side of the sport.

Kellerman said, “When he seems to make fights, it’s either when a guy who is toward the end and he knows it.” He further went on to name the former welterweight world champion, Shawn Porter, and used the term ‘underdog.’ The 49-year-old reporter further claimed that Haymon only made such fights happen when his fighter’s win is certain.

Kellerman also gave the reason why it is important for the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford fight to take place as the two are top fighters in their division. And the winner of this fight is not certain. And it can be said that they both have an equal chance of winning. He added, “And that’s why I believe we have to see Crawford and Spence yet. Because I don’t think he knows his guy is gonna win in that case.”‘

Kellerman on the threat Shakur Stevenson poses to Haymon

The ESPN reporter also mentioned the threat two-division world champion Shakur Stevenson carries with him for the promoter. He said, “Shakur Stevenson seems to represent the kind of threat that although no matter how much money is available to get Haymon to risk his guy against Shakur.”

According to Kellerman, the promoter seems to be considerate of a fighter like Stevenson. And would not put his fighter against the former featherweight champion regardless of the money on the line.
