At the age of 14, Devin moved with Bill to Las Vegas—a decision that proved pivotal for his boxing journey. There, Bill immersed himself in the sport, becoming more than just a father figure. He took on the role of strategist, mentor, and trainer, laying the groundwork for Team Haney.

Bill Haney’s controversial past and conviction

Bill Haney’s path to becoming one of boxing’s most dedicated father/trainers began with a troubled past. At 22, he was convicted of possession and conspiracy to distribute cocaine, serving 40 months of a 60-month sentence at Lompoc Penitentiary. Raised in Oakland, California—a city he described as “the city of dope”—Haney was drawn into the drug trade as a teenager.

His time behind bars marked a turning point; facing the harsh reality of street life and the heartbreak he caused his family, he vowed to change. Upon his release, he entered the music industry, working with artists like Aaliyah and DMX. But it was the birth of his son Devin that pushed him to leave his criminal past behind for good. Determined to give his children a better future, Bill built a new life around boxing, using his discipline and street wisdom to shape Devin into a world champion.

He built gyms, sold assets, and even homeschooled Devin while traveling across the U.S. to ensure elite training. Their unique dynamic is rooted in trust, resilience, and shared sacrifice. From sparring sessions posted on YouTube to fights in Tijuana at 17, Bill crafted Devin’s path with vision and grit.

Their historic triumph over George Kambosos Jr. in Australia symbolized more than a boxing win—it was a father and son overcoming adversity together to create a lasting legacy in the sport.
