The lightweight division is set to witness one of its most highly anticipated fights. The three-division world champion, Gervonta Davis, will finally have his long-drawn showdown against lightweight phenom, Ryan Garcia. Meanwhile, he was also known for being the boxing superstar, Floyd Mayweather’s longtime prodigy who fought under the Mayweather Promotions banner. Davis has since left Mayweather’s promotional company after a 7-year-long run. As the hype for ‘Tank’ vs Garcia builds up, a resurfaced video showed Mayweather detailing why he signed Davis in the first place.

Davis faced Isaac Cruz at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, on December 5, 2021. And Mayweather was present at the official press conference for the fight. ESNEWS caught up with him after the official presser.

Floyd Mayweather reveals why he chose Gervonta Davis

In conversation, the interviewer asked him about his motivation behind signing Davis. He also asked Mayweather what he had seen in Davis at that time.

Mayweather responded by saying, “He talked about this. He talked about the Adrien Broner story. Actually when he came to the gym. And it was a day before Adrien Broner was fighting Shawn Porter. Right after the win, we went to the gym, because he wanted to see ‘Tank’ box Devin Haney.”

He further continued his story, “You know, Devin Haney was in good shape. ‘Tank’ wasn’t in good shape. But, they worked. And it was some crazy work. And, just with him and Devin working. It was crazy entertaining work, at that particular time. So I said, you know what? I like this kid.”

Moreover, he mentioned that his assistant later reached out to Davis with a contract.

Davis takes a ‘dangerous’ decision

The boxing world was undoubtedly stunned after Davis announced his decision to leave. Many fans even called this decision a dangerous one. However, he made it a point to mention why he did so. He said, “I’m just doing my own thing. Not sad, in the future, we can work together and everything like that. I’m coming, get my own passions.”

Additionally, he also stated that Mayweather had done all he could for him.
