WATCH: Canelo Alvarez In Extreme Pain As Trainer Puts Him Through Torturous Neck Routine

The undisputed champion, Canelo Alvarez, looks all set to face the Russian boxer, Dmitry Bivol for the WBA (Super) light heavyweight title on May 7. A recent video from his training camp shows the champ executing a brutal neck training session.

Canelo Alvarez is seen performing neck rotations while using a harness for resistance. The high level of physical exertion required for the session is also visible on his face.

He is currently in camp with his manager and trainer, Eddy Reynoso, ahead of his fight with Bivol.

Alvarez also revealed to ESPN Deportes that he has switched to a vegan diet in preparation for his fight. Talking about his diet, he said, “I do try to stick to eating vegan all week. I feel very good, my body has adapted very well.”

He also added that he had been feeling stronger on the diet and that he would actually recommend a vegan diet.

Alvarez is no stranger when it comes to physically demanding training routines.

He underwent a ruthless training camp ahead of his fight with Caleb Plant in 2021. Alvarez and Reynoso focused on old school combat training. A lot of contenders prefer modern machinery and exercise equipment to assist in training camps.

However, Alvarez took to a bare bones gym with an emphasis on old-school strength and conditioning equipment. He also focused on a lot of real-life drills as a part of the training.

Alvarez traveled to San Diego to train for the fight against Miguel Cotto in 2015. He focused on building up his endurance and also his speed.

The workout also shows Alvarez giving a lot of emphasis on bag work and also on footwork drills.

Similarly, Alvarez returned to San Diego to train for his rematch against Gennady Golovkin in 2018.

Alvarez also mentioned that his training strategy differs depending on the fighter. Talking about the strategy he employed for the Golovkin training camp, Alvarez said, “The last fight gave us the blueprint for this rematch. We don’t necessarily have to change the strategy, we just have to add to what we did.”

Talking about their varied styles, he further added, “I’m a fighter who is a counter puncher, and his style is a come forward style. So I think both styles will lead to a great fight.”
