Following a lengthy contractual dispute with Golden Boy Promotions, PPV king Canelo Alvarez will return to action against Callum Smith on December 19 in a main-event clash at the Alamodome Stadium in Texas.

It will be his first appearance since knocking out Sergey Kovalev in 2019, more than a year ago. While fans were eagerly waiting for Canelo’s return, the multi-division champion has obliged. He is ready to end the year with a blockbuster event.

That said, he will put a lot on the line when he steps in the ring against Callum Smith. After departing from the Golden Boy Promotions, Canelo has made headlines for not so good reasons. So, his upcoming fight will bring him a chance to regain relevancy.

He will also have a chance to grab the WBC belt and Callum Smith’s world titles, which further twists the tale.

As per reports, Alvarez vs Smith will see the vacant WBC middleweight strap and Smith’s WBA and Ring Magazine belts up for grabs.

It will be an additional opportunity for Canelo Alvarez to increase the number of straps around his shoulder. However, a win will also force him to re-appear in the ring within a span of 90 days.

It clearly assures boxing fans that Alvarez is nowhere out of the title picture and his fans can expect him to see soon if he gets past Callum Smith.

What’s next for Canelo Alvarez?

Although ‘Mundo’ Smith is his top priority for the moment, the Mexican gladiator shall also look to decode Avni Yildirim in the future.

The winner of Alvarez vs Smith will have to defend the belts against Yildirim within 90 days. That said, Alvarez might have found his next opponent in the Turkish prodigy.

However, Callum Smith can pose a stiff threat to Alvarez. Despite being an A-lister, Canelo hasn’t embraced the ring for long and also faced legal turmoils with his long time promoter So his return will also challenge his superstardom and the ability to generate buys.

So, it’s safe to state that Alvarez will be measured under several parameters on the fight night. However, akin to a true champion, he appears ready to prove his worth.
