A trilogy fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder is no longer in consideration. As a result, the undefeated British champion will return to action on December 5. However, there has been no announcement of his opponent just yet. Further, Fury is yet to sanction a defense of his belt.

The latest news from the World Boxing Council may give a little more context for the situation.

Fury’s camp believe the rematch clause in Deontay Wilder’s contract has expired. So, they have moved on to search for a different opponent, with recent reports suggesting it could be Carlos Takam. However, there has been more complication, with WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirming that Fury’s camp has not requested a sanction for the title defense as yet.

Speaking to World Boxing News, Sulaiman said, “The World Boxing Council has not received any sanction request from Tyson Fury. Therefore, we cannot comment on any speculations (regarding a possible voluntary request).”

So, what’s next for Tyson Fury?

There are 2 options for Tyson Fury as of now. The WBC champion could fight his home-coming bout without it being a title defense. This would mean that the WBC belt would not be on the line. Or, he could fight one of the WBC contenders as a voluntary title defense and request a sanction from the body.

However, only the top 15 WBC ranked fighters would qualify for this. And most of the big name fighters are set for fights in the same period. Deontay Wilder is the number one contender, but he is seemingly out. The highest rank contender after Wilder is Oscar Rivas, ranked at 8. Whereas Fury’s reported opponent, Carlos Takam does not rank in the top 15.

This puts the WBC champion in a spot of bother. Without the fight being a title fight, it may not interest the other fighters to get in the ring with the devastating champion. Also, the available contenders may not be the super-star names for Fury’s first fight back in the UK in almost 3 years. Expect this to continue for a while before any announcement is made.
