WBC President Announces New Division in Memory Of 6-Year Old Hero Bridger Walker

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has announced a new division that will fall between the cruiserweight and the heavyweight division. The new 224lbs division will be called the Bridgerweight division. The sanctioning body has named it after six-year-old hero Bridger Walker.

The story of Bridger Walker went viral on social media after he was mauled by a German Shepherd while trying to save his sister. The news made international headlines and the entire world lauded the six-year-old for his bravery.

Walker required 90 stitches after being bitten by the dog while attempting to rescue his sister. When asked about his courageous decision Bridger said, “I stepped to the side, in front of my sister so that the dog wouldn’t get her.” Bridger said.

Was the new Bridgerweight division really necessary?

The bridgerweight division will fall under the 200lb cruiserweight and the 200lb plus heavyweight division. However, the new weight class will have a limit of 224lbs.

If we talk about the boxers who could be looking at competing in this division, Deontay Wilder and Oleksandr Usyk come to mind. However, nothing has been made official yet.

Boxing enthusiasts have criticized WBC in the past for coming up with unwarranted things. Earlier, Vasyl Lomachenko and Canelo Alvarez were awarded the Franchise Championship – a title that cannot be lost inside the ring.

It will be interesting to see if the other organizations will follow suit with the new weight class. However, the chances look very slim. Needless to say, the new weight class is set to open up a lot of debate on the same among boxing circles.

However, fans should note that WBC’s decision to honor Bridger Walker sends a strong message to the outside world. It is inspiring and has certainly brought a positive message from the boxing field to the outside world.
