There have been long-drawn talks about the inclusion of a special category for transgender athletes across all sports. While trans athletes have been included in many sports, there was never a division that specifically catered to entertain them. In a pathbreaking decision, the World Boxing Council (WBC) announced that the organization was creating a separate category dedicated to transgender boxers. And, it was revealed that the decision was made to ensure the safety of athletes. Meanwhile, WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, recently gave further details with regard to the decision.

Sulaiman mentioned that the organization would never allow a transgender fighter born a male to fight a biological woman. Moreover, he stated that the division will have categories organized by an ‘at birth’ rule. Notably, a transgender boxer-born male would only fight a similar fighter, and vice versa.

In a recent interview, he delved into the decision by the organization. He said, “What we want to do is create a transgender boxing program. Not necessarily a belt, or a championship. Simply a competition, so they can be included in boxing and not excluded. We put this together, we’re going to be working. “

Sulaiman further added, “We created a committee to put together a program for transgender boxing that can find inclusion to those athletes who wish to take part in boxing.”

Additionally, he mentioned that the organization wishes to bring the opportunity for these potential athletes. And also stated that boxing is not just a sport and that a fighter’s life is at risk.

Mauricio Sulaiman delves into the details of the division

While there was information about the organization starting a new division for trans athletes, a lot of boxing fans were left pondering about the belts and the rules the division entailed.

Sulaiman put these queries to rest in the very same interview. He mentioned that the new category will not mean that a new world title will be created. Moreover, the division’s goal was to provide a platform for trans athletes. It was also revealed that the organization currently does not have a timeline for a potential fight once the division is established.
