Weight classes exist for a specific and essential reason. A boxer with a heavier weight is bound to be more powerful and absorb punches better. However, there is an ongoing debate in the boxing world about having fewer weight divisions. Recently, WBA and WBC introduced a new weight class to their respective leagues. The WBC created the new bridgerweight division and soon the WBA followed suit and introduced the super cruiserweight division. Both divisions have a weight class of 200-224 pounds.

This addition has ignited distinct reactions and sparked a debate amongst boxing fans, including from a boxing promoter who expressed his reservations about the new development. Who is this boxing promoter and what does he have to suggest? Let’s find that out.

Is a new weight division required? Boxing promoter weighs-in

The boxing promoter is none other than Hall of Fame promoter, Lou DiBella, who is not just a boxing promoter but an advocate for the sport. After the news about the new weight divisions came out, the promoter, who oversaw HBO’s boxing programming from 1989 to 2000, weighed in on the matter. Judging from his statement, he was unhappy with the new additions. “We need fewer titles, fewer interim titles, fewer weight classes, fewer fraudulent situations and fewer rating organizations,” Lou DiBella told ESPN.

DiBella believes that the sport is overrun with unnecessary entities and unnecessary things. However, it would be reasonable to say that he is deeply concerned about the sport, not just in the capacity of a promoter, but even as a fan. Let’s take a look at another instance when he spoke out against another development.

Lou DiBella is against 3 minute round in women’s boxing

Recently, the world of women’s boxing saw the advent of 3-minute rounds instead of the usual 2-minute rounds similar to men’s boxing. However, DiBella found it problematic, as the initial norm was more entertaining to witness. While expressing his resentment for the same, he stated, “It’s the stupidest thing ever and was started by haters looking for excuses for why they hate, and the women’s boxing product is awesome the way it is.”

On one hand, fans argue that less weight division would attract a better matchup, while on the other hand, fans argue for more weight classes as it assists in creating more world champions. However, one can safely assume that Lou DiBella does not shy away from calling a spade a spade when he feels like it.

However, we are curious to know, which side of the argument you are on. Share with us your thoughts in the comments below.
