There haven’t been any signs that show former undisputed super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez would ever fight former two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford. On top of that, since Crawford squared off against Israil Madrimov earlier this year, many seem to have discouraged the Nebraska-born boxer from pursuing him. 

However, ‘Bud’ has remained adamant about luring the Mexican superstar to the ring to get his last big fight before retiring from the sport. Regardless, Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is in hot pursuit of Crawford to get his big fight and prove he is the big dog around his division, which he is unable to get because ‘Bud’ seems to have tunnel vision for Canelo.

It’s quite the conundrum, as Crawford continues his hopeful climb to the 168-pound division. Amid this drama, former world champion and Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. appeared in an interview where he voiced his support for a fight between Crawford and Canelo while making a point against a potential Crawford vs. Ennis fight. 

Speaking to Marcos Villegas from Fight Hub TV, Roy Jones Jr. reflected on the potential ‘Boots’ Ennis vs. Crawford fight, asking, “What he got to prove to Boots? Boots trying to take over, [and] start beating the guys around him, proving he’s the best of that group.” Jones Jr. felt Crawford was in a class above Ennis, adding, “Bud [doesn’t] need to come back down to 147 to meet him.”

The 55-year-old branded the entire notion “crazy,” suggesting Crawford is trying to make history by fighting Canelo Alvarez and potentially defeating him before leaving the sport. “If he beats him, he may go fight Benavidez. If he [doesn’t] beat him, he say, ‘Okay, I took it with the eyes, I can go. I’m done’,” Roy Jones Jr. explained. 

That being said, Crawford recently stepped aside to let Errol Spence Jr. fight Sebastian Fundora in early 2025, given the understanding that a super welterweight unification bout will be held later down the line. Meanwhile, ‘The Truth’ has also shared his thoughts on a potential Crawford vs. Canelo bout. 

Errol Spence Jr. feels Terence Crawford could beat Canelo Alvarez

Last year, Terence Crawford defeated Spence Jr. in one of the most brutal one-sided matchups, becoming the undisputed welterweight champion. However, this loss doesn’t seem to have left Spence Jr. with a bitter taste, as he shared his thoughts on the potential fight between Crawford and Canelo. “It could happen, why not,” he said. 

Spence felt if Crawford wanted to challenge himself to be great, “Let him try to be great. I’m with it. I’d be going for ‘Bud’ if he fought Canelo.” Spence claimed he is not sure whether Crawford could pull off a win against Canelo, yet “I’d definitely be going for Crawford. If anybody could pull it off, he could pull it off.”

It appears despite no signs of life in the Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez fight, most people are still rooting for it to happen. Now, someone just has to pay $150 million to Canelo to make that fight happen. Do you think the fight will ever happen?
