Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya has explained the choice of opponent for rising welterweight star Vergil Ortiz Jr. He explained the aspects that make Maurice Hooker a threat to the undefeated fighter.

Ortiz Jr has taken the welterweight division by storm and is the next big thing. However, Hooker, an experienced contender, and former world champion, will provide the welterweight boxer with the perfect platform for him to prove himself. His promoter De La Hoya agrees.

Speaking at the pre-fight press conference, ‘The Golden Boy’ said, “He’s going to present to Vergil different movements, different footwork, speed, his mannerisms, are totally different than what Vergil has been used to fighting in the past.”

De La Hoya then spoke about the fight coming at the perfect time for Ortiz Jr. The promoter said it’s all about providing him with the different styles for his development. Given Hooker’s experience, this is the next step in the young welterweight’s career.

De La Hoya also knows Ortiz Jr faces a challenge to beat Hooker. He said, “Maurice Hooker presents a totally unique different style. He’s fast, he’s explosive, he’s very elusive. It’s going to be different for Vergil and the question is, will he pass that test.”
