Errol Spence Jr. has stated that his father Errol Spence Sr. is the motivation behind his successful boxing career. Arguably one of the greatest of all time, Spence Jr. currently reigns as the unified welterweight champion of the world.

The position of a father in anybody’s life holds the utmost importance. This holds true in every field of life, and the world of boxing is no different.

Many professional boxers have gone on to become some of the best to ever step inside the ring under the guidance of their fathers.

On occasion, they have been professional boxers, while some have scaled the heights of the sport having been former champions of the game.

Boxers have carried forward their patriarch’s legacy and gone on to further cement their family’s name in the world of boxing. However. there have also been examples where, despite the continuation of the legacy, there hasn’t been any history with regard to boxing. Errol Spence Sr. is one such name.

‘The Truth‘ always had his father by his side. The former Olympian has stated in a newspaper interview that his father was always there for him since the start.

He added that Spence Sr. always took an active interest and was the backbone to his success. He took the responsibility of carefully handpicking his coaches and was a vital part of his life growing up.

“It really wasn’t my choice. I came home from school and 20 minutes later we pulled up to a boxing gym. He didn’t tell me where we were going.

“What’s going on? We going to pick up something? And then we’re in a boxing gym and he’s asking the coach when can I start, and I started the next day.”

Speaking about his father, who is a retired FedEx contractor, Errol Spence Jr. shed light on how he started training. ‘The Truth’ has also revealed that Muhammad Ali acted as an inspiration for both him and his father.

It is this relationship between the two that has made Errol Spence Jr. scale the heights of the boxing world.
