The famed boxing trainer was just released from prison on 21 January after being arrested for felony assault charges related to an incident in Las Vegas. However, right after his return to daily life, a clip of Ford from November 27 surfaced online today, and Shakur is mentioned in it.

Shakur Stevenson last entered the ring against Edwin De Los Santos in a fight that had the entire boxing world condemning Shakur for his subpar performance. So, when the reporter from Marko Boxing probed Ford about a potential fight between his star pupil and ‘Sugar’ Stevenson right after the latter’s fight, the Upton gym coach had this to say!

Calvin Ford states that everyone expects Gervonta Davis to get knockout wins

After Ford’s release, a clip from the interview started getting traction on the internet and was picked up by ‘According To Boxing‘ and shared on X. Reflecting on Shakur’s last fight, Davis’ trainer stated, “I ain’t even gonna talk about that fight, man. Look, that last card, [I] got that out [of] my mind. It was horrible!”

Later, when the reporter probed Ford, asking what if Shakur adopted the same strategy of staying away as much as he could against ‘Tank’? Would that pose a problem to Gervonta Davis? “Well, why would I put Tank in a situation like that? [Where] we can’t do – what we do,” Ford answered with confidence.

He also added that Shakur’s strategy to stay away from his opponents makes the prospect of the fight unlikely because everyone expects ‘Tank’ to get a KO win. “Because, right now, if Tank [doesn’t] get a knockout, it’s gonna…you get what I’m saying. Because everybody thinks Tank got to knock everybody out to win a fight,” said Ford.

While Ford has eliminated any chance of the fight ever happening, Stevenson had previously shown interest in fighting Davis.

According to a report from Boxing Scene (November 2023), before Stevenson’s awful showing against De Los Santos, the undefeated boxer claimed, “I think it’s the biggest fight in the world…I think that me and him [are] two of the best fighters in the world.” When asked about the weight class for the fight, Stevenson said, “I think ’35 is the weight…I think that he’ll fight at 135 for a while, too.”

He even had a profit split in mind, claiming to be reasonable because of Davis’ ability to bring in the viewers. “Sixty-forty? Honestly, why would I not take it?” Stevenson said during an open workout at Top Rank’s gym. He added, “[Gervonta Davis] he’s the biggest superstar in the sport, so give me the call, and I’m ready to talk.”
