Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez had a taste of the NFL after making an appearance for Monday Night Football. The league returned to Mexico City after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Moreover, the match took place at the Azteca Stadium with celebrities from across the country coming to see the game.

The match took place between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers, the same teams that played the first game of its kind outside the United States in 2005. Alvarez was given the opportunity to hold the coin toss prior to the match and then watched the game in a luxurious box along with the Director of the NFL Mexico, Arturo Olivé.

The Mexican superstar also walked around the field greeting players and the fans. However, this is not the first time Alvarez has been in a stadium used for football matches.

Last year Alvarez beat Billy Joe Saunders at the AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, another NFL franchise. Thus it was no surprise that the fans were also quick to react to the undisputed champion’s appearance in his home country.

Fans react to Canelo Alvarez appearing for an NFL game

One fan claimed that Alvarez was in the stadium to check it out for his next bout. “He’s checking out the stadium for his next match on 5 de Mayo” he wrote. Another fan hilariously mocked Saul’s appearance and compared it to singer Elton John. “Canelo over there looking like Elton John!” he wrote.

Moreover, one fan wanted Alvarez to know that he was standing on the wrong sideline. “Wrong sideline Champ,” he wrote. Another fan wondered if Alvarez even knew the players he shook hands with. “Canelo dont know anyone who shook his hand,” he wrote.

The fans genuinely felt that Alvarez was here more as a spectator than a fan. However, just his appearance for a match hosted in his country did provide the match with some added entertainment and also a great spectacle for fans.
