It is not uncommon to notice numerous successful father-son duos in the sport of boxing. One of the greatest boxers in recent times; Floyd Mayweather Jr. was coached by his father in the nascent stages of his career. Not to mention the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, and many others who made a name for themselves under the guidance of their fathers.

However, Timothy Bradley considers the same to be unwanted and not idealistic. Bradley is a retired professional boxer and had a celebrated career as a multiple-weight world champion. The 39-year-old, after retiring from the sport in 2016 transitioned his career as a boxing analyst. He is vocal about his opinions and his eagerness to outlaw a father-son relationship in boxing is a testament to the same.

Timothy Bradley wants to “ban” fathers from becoming head trainers of their sons

Bradley is not opposed to a father being involved in his son’s boxing career but he is specifically against a father being the head trainer for his son. Reflecting on the same, as per Boxing Scene, he stated, “Your father cannot be your trainer. He can be in your corner, whatever, but he cannot be your trainer.”

He is vehemently against the same and even wants the boxing federation to legislate outlawing a father being permitted to be his son’s head coach. He added, “I think it should be banned.” Intriguingly, Bradley himself was under the guidance of his father, Timothy Bradley Sr. but never in the capacity of a head trainer. He has been seen in his corner and was a great supporter throughout his son’s career but he has never been his trainer. This fact adds credibility to his opinion but to make this more credible and substantiate his point, Bradley dives in on why a father being the head coach is not ideal.

Why does Timothy Bradley oppose fathers being head trainers of their sons?

Bradley is of the opinion that fathers may not have the best interest of their sons in their minds. The same may result in fathers wanting their sons to win and not stopping the fights at the right time. Reflecting on the same, he stated, “You see these fathers not stepping in and stopping fights, letting the fights go on too late”.
