Undisputed champion Claressa Shields is one of the most exciting female boxers currently. In a shocking revelation, Shields deeply related to the phrase ‘never meet your idols’. As she met her childhood idol, tennis legend, Serena Williams.

Unfortunately, after meeting Williams at the Rio Olympics in 2016, Shields came out being extremely disappointed with her idol as the meeting didn’t go as smoothly as she had hoped.

Claressa Shields was surprised after meeting Serena Williams

The 2016 Olympic Games were iconic for the American boxer as she made history in front of the entire world. However, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows as she met Serena Williams. In an interview with Detroit Free Press, Shields claimed that she was disappointed after meeting Williams in person as she turned to be unfriendly with fans.

She said, “She [Serena Williams] was just not nice. For me to look up to her like I did when I was a kid and then meet her in person and see how she’s not fan-friendly.” According to the 27-year-old, the tennis star was mean to many people, which made Shields not look up to her anymore.

She stated, “She was kind of mean to a lot of people at the Olympics and just kind of made me not want to be like her. Because I’m different.” Furthermore, Shields cleared that even though she is a fan of Willams as an athlete, but not a person. She said, “I’m a fan of her being a great athlete, just not a fan of her as a person, if that makes sense?”

The undisputed champion represented her country at the highest stage at the young of 17 years in London. Consequently, Shields put on a scintillating show throughout the tournament and won the gold medal in the middleweight division.

Following that incredible victory, Shields entered the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil with the same intention. Shields created history as she became the first American boxer to win back-to-back gold medals at the Olympics.
