Are Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal worth the massive paychecks they're getting for this boxing match?

Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal are going to run it back again. But this time, it won’t be in the Octagon. Diaz’s contract with the UFC expired in November 2022, and this time they want to settle it in the boxing ring. “I feel that Diaz is very limited from what I saw in his fight against Jake Paul. It does not change. He just comes forward and tries to tire guys out. This is boxing, and he will be on par with me. July 6 will show that I am firmly a student of this game,” Masvidal said about his opponent. On July 6, the longtime UFC rivals will be throwing punches at each other at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. It will be a 10-round light-heavyweight bout, and the ‘Stockton Slugger’ will be looking to get his revenge for his loss at UFC 244 in 2019 which robbed him of the “baddest motherf**ker” belt.

In his last boxing match, Nate Diaz went the distance with Jake Paul. He showed great determination but was outclassed by the young boxer with quick reflexes who scored a fifth-round knockdown and ultimately won the fight via a unanimous decision. Meanwhile, ‘Gamebred’s’ last boxing fight was against Joseph Benjamin in 2005. Masvidal managed to secure a majority decision victory. In a way, the upcoming fight would be a level playing field for both contenders as both have limited experience in professional boxing. With such high-profile names in the combat world ready for a showdown, one might be eager to know the purse split that convinced them to sign on the dotted line.

The upcoming boxing pay-per-view event between the two mixed martial artists will be co-promoted by Diaz’s Real Fight Inc. and Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing. Both fighters will earn a guaranteed purse split of $500k each, according to Sports Salaries.com. However, that is not all.

Diaz and Masvidal are expected to make more than six figures if we factor in the percentage share of the PPV sales, sponsorship incomes, and discretionary bonuses. However, the PPV revenue split has not been disclosed to the public yet. Nonetheless, a substantial portion of the fighter’s earnings and the event’s financial success will depend on the PPV buys. Case in point: the fight was rescheduled from June 1st to July 6. On its original date, it would have had to butt heads with the UFC 302 event, and the Queensbury vs Matchroom Boxing 5vs.5 event held in Saudi Arabia.

It remains to be seen if the UFC veterans’ star power would be enough for the MMA fans to spend some cash as they battle it out inside a boxing ring.

Diaz vs. Masvidal: Total Fight Earnings from UFC 244

The UFC 244 main event fight at Madison Square Garden for the inaugural BMF title in 2019 between Diaz and Masvidal was a bloodbath. With powerful combinations, devastating elbows, and a dangerous kick to the head, Masvidal was punishing Diaz throughout the fight. An elbow from Masvidal in the clinch had opened up a cut over Diaz’s right eye, which ultimately proved to be detrimental. It forced the ringside physician of the New York State Athletic Commission to call off the bout between the third and fourth rounds, awarding a TKO victory to Masvidal.

Obviously when you put on an event, you want a definitive, spectacular finish, but you don’t get it all the time,” UFC President Dana White said after the conclusion of the UFC 244 main event. Even though Diaz lost his opportunity to grab the title, he earned a guaranteed fight purse of $500,000. It was the same for Masvidal as well. Again, the overall earnings from the fight for both combat specialists must have been way higher if we factor in pay-per-view points.

Hopefully, the rematch in the boxing ring will have a non-controversial ending with a clear winner to settle the score once and for all.

Although Jorge Masvidal remains under contract with the UFC after signing an extension with the company in 2022, he has been allowed to compete in boxing matches. He has not ruled out his chances for a possible comeback fight in the UFC after announcing his retirement following the loss to Gilbert Burns. Meanwhile, Diaz was also eyeing a return to the biggest MMA fight promotion at the UFC 300 event, but the ‘Stockton Slugger’ couldn’t close a deal with Dana White.
