It is an exciting action-packed weekend for fight fans. On September 14, two major combat sports events—UFC 306: Riyadh Season Noche, featuring Sean O’Malley vs Merab Dvalishvili as the headliner, and the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga event—will be vying for your attention. O’Malley will be defending his UFC bantamweight title against the Georgian challenger Dvalishvili. It will be a battle of two opposing fighting styles — an elite striker vs an elite grappler.

O’Malley has proven himself to be a master in the striking department, knocking out twelve of the nineteen opponents he fought. The fast and elusive fighter is particularly good with his fists and had previously shown interest in crossing over to boxing. In a recent interview with renowned sports commentator Stephen A. Smith, O’Malley claimed that he could beat WBA lightweight champion and a KO artist himself, Gervonta Davis provided he gets “six months legitimate boxing camp”.

On that note, during the final pre-fight presser for the Noche UFC event at the iconic Sphere, O’Malley was asked by a journalist—“You intend to cross over one day? So if you get a big win over Merab, with millions of people watching from all over the world, do you think that pushes you closer to getting a super fight with a guy like Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis one day?”

The 29-year-old fighter didn’t rule out the possibility of a fight with Davis, but before that, he wants to pad up his UFC record with more knockout wins, which also includes one against his upcoming opponent. “Yeah, it depends on my performances. I got to go out there and knock this dude out with my hands. I do that a few more times, that fight’s inevitable,” ‘Suga’ Sean stated confidently.

However, the UFC fighter’s dream of switching to boxing is heavily contingent upon his fight contract negotiated with UFC head Dana White. Many mixed martial artists have crossed over to boxing and faced disastrous consequences. Therefore, Dana White may have reservations about O’Malley, who is touted to be UFC’s current biggest active star, fighting a top-notch boxer like Tank Davis. The fight might cause a huge dent in UFC’s reputation if the Irish-American fighter ends up getting knocked out. However, Gervonta Davis isn’t the only boxer O’Malley has called out.

Ryan Garcia in Sean O’ Malley’s crosshairs

Following Ryan Garcia‘s victory over Devin Haney, which was later turned into a no-contest, Sean O’Malley took to his podcast to reveal that he had preliminary discussions with the UFC head Dana White to have a potential boxing match with Ryan Garcia. The fighter revealed at that time that he wasn’t ready yet to enter the squared circle, but the possibility of a boxing match in the near future was very much possible. “They told me you can do a boxing fight, 100 percent, if it makes us enough money,” he revealed.

I’m not there yet. I’ve still got to become bigger. Two more f**king sick performances, then we’re talking about being able to do it,” O’Malley added. On the other hand, Ryan Garcia has also expressed his interest in fighting the Irish-origin mixed martial artist either in the Octagon or a boxing ring.
