Boxing icon Canelo Alvarez has his eyes set on the highly anticipated upcoming matchup between two-time super-middleweight champion David Benavidez and the former IBF title holder Caleb Plant. Before this competitive contest, the Mexican superstar speculated about Benavidez’s fate. The latter is seen as a fighter who had the potential to dethrone Canelo.

WBC recently ordered a mandatory bout between two-star super-middleweight fighters. The winner of this eliminator fight will challenge Canelo next year.

This is the reason the hard hitter Mexican is analyzing this fight. Before Benavidez and Plant meet, Canelo shared his thoughts on the verdict.

Michael Benson of talkSports reported it on Twitter. He wrote, “Canelo Alvarez on David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant: “It’s going to be a very competitive fight, I personally believe that Benavidez wins. I am here to face the best and make the best fights, whatever leads me to make history, that is why I am here.”

The Mexican Monster is undefeated. Since Canelo became the super-middleweight champion, his critics accused him of ducking the former. However, Canelo has his own reasons for doing that. Earlier, he claimed that he was representing Mexico and would not take a shot at any Mexican fighter.

But people see it as a reason to avoid Benavidez, because in boxing, the champion has to defend his title irrespective of the opponent’s nationality.

Will Canelo Alvarez fight Benavidez?

If Canelo remains adamant on his stand, he would avoid Benavidez. But it would cost him then. He would have to vacate the WBC title because the boxing world does not care about fighters’ stand. If the challenger is mandatory, then the champion has to face him in order to secure his belt.

Plant, Canelo’s former opponent can stop it from happening. If he wins, Canelo will certainly take up the challenge. The duo met earlier in 2021 and Canelo knocked him out.
