With just one year of his contract remaining at the Emirates, Arsenal’s out of form defender, Thomas Vermaelen, has been constantly linked with a transfer to Manchester United. His transfer fee, which is assumed to be around £10m, is well within reach for Louis van Gaal.

United have already lost their long serving veteran defenders Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra and their manager, Louis Van Gaal has admitted that he is looking for new defenders. All the three defenders were highly experienced which helped the Manchester United squad both on and off the field. Losing players of this kind of stature is a heavy loss to any team. Their loss leaves Louis van Gaal with only three players to choose from; Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, all of whom lack experience.

Meanwhile, bringing the 28-year old Vermaelen can be a good addition and could prove to add some much required strength to the bench, at least. The experienced centre back can play a versatile role in the United defensive line up. Vermaelen is known to be a tough tackler and also has a great discipline and passing accuracy, which was 89% last season. These stats are better than any of the three defenders available for United as per talksport.com.

The thing which Vermaelen can bring to the United squad is experience, something that the club lacks. The Belgian is currently out of form, but as we all know, things can change pretty soon in this game.
