By any measure, it will appear as if the heat is on Canelo Alvarez. The undisputed super middleweight champion is literally being bombarded from all corners with only one question. When is he going to fight David Benavidez? The Phoenix, Arizona-born boxer, already a WBC mandatory challenger, has lately built a better case for a battle with the Mexican icon. It was as if fans and followers were holding themselves back.

Alvarez shared a picture of him taking a sip from his tequila-based cocktail drink, Viva Mexico Cabrones (VMC), early this morning. He wrote, “Have you got your #VMC for the weekend yet?” Soon, a hailstorm of comments broke in. Both boxers had a good run this year. Benavidez successfully defended his interim super middleweight title from Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade. Alvarez, on the other hand, defeated John Ryder and Jermell Charlo to retain the undisputed title.

Give us what we need, fans tell Canelo Alvarez

The tone and vibe of all the comments were consistent across the board. That’s how most followers and die-hards view the epic clash between two of modern boxing’s most skilled practitioners.

Seemingly a fan, this user urged Alvarez to put an end to the naysayers’ claims by fighting Benavidez. The fan had already told everyone that the bout would happen; hence, it’s high time the undisputed champion puts an end to all speculations: “Canelo, give that fight to Benavidez, so you can bring it back to reality and shut the mouths of those haters [and] tell them, I told them this would happen, Great Mr. Saul.

This follower asked directly. Whether Alvarez is so afraid of Benavidez that he wouldn’t move in his direction? It is their fight everyone wants to see; hence, they won’t tolerate him anymore if he tries to run away: “Stop running to Benavidez because you’re so scared of him? Benavidez vs. Canelo in May—that’s the one we want to see. Don’t run away from him anymore.

This user took up the rumored talks of a Munguia fight. Spelling out the Mexican boxer’s surname incorrectly, they lamented that Alvarez seems willing to take on Jaime Munguia but won’t go against Benavidez: “Fighting Bumguia and duckin Benavidez.” Sounding impatient, this user asked Alvarez if he could share whether the fight with Benavidez had been scheduled: “Better tell us if you already have a date for the fight with Benavidez?

However, there was no dearth of die-hard Canelo Alvarez fans. One of them highlighted that his detractors assume that he is concerned about David Benavidez. However, in reality, the champion is absolutely chilled. Calling their idol the greatest, the fan said that nothing good will come out in favor of ‘The Mexican Monster.’ “Canelo just relaxed while haters think he cares about Benavides. Canelo, you are the best, Benavides; doesn’t deserve anything.

On his part, David Benavidez has been chasing the big fight relentlessly. Right from a call-out after the Caleb Plant fight to a reported eight-figure offer, the young Arizonian has been clear about his intentions. It is the fight he needs to establish a legacy that will last a lifetime.

Route to an epic fight or fights?

Canelo Alvarez is in on a three-fight deal with PBC, said to be worth $100 million. The September 30 Jermell Charlo bout was the first one. Reportedly, Benavidez will have time until March 2024 for his mandatory challenger status to get over. However, even after that, it’s not certain that Alvarez will finally settle down to face him.

The grapevine is that he might have a fight against Jermall Charlo. The latter recently returned after a two-year’ break and defeated Jose Benavidez Jr. Rumor has it that he is very keen to pursue Alvarez and avenge his brother’s loss. Then finally, the Mexican could always go back to a rematch with old nemesis Dmitry Bivol.
