Next weekend, on 9 December, Regis Prograis and Devin Haney are set to face off in a super-lightweight title clash, with Prograis risking his WBC strap for the second time. Prograis secured the vacant WBC belt last year against Jose Zepeda, with his only loss in 2019 against Josh Taylor. Haney, undefeated with 30 wins, is the current unified champion in the lightweight division but aims to become a two-weight class champion by defeating Prograis.

With a ten-year age difference favoring Haney, the bout promises to be a compelling showdown of experience against youthful energy. Recently, Haney showed up for his final sparring session before the big fight. A fan was present and waiting for Haney so he could shower his love and support for his revered boxer. The fan had a surprise for ‘The Dream’?

Fan surprises Devin Haney before his last sparring session

In a clip posted by Thaboxingvoice on YouTube, Haney can be seen preparing for the sparring session in his gym. While at the gym, a fan dropped by to meet ‘The Dream’. The fan had a collection of boxing-themed T-shirts and sweatshirts with images of Mike Tyson and other boxing legends on them. The clothes had insignia of popular boxing matches from the 90’s, which means that they were sold as promotional merchandise around the time of the fight.

Haney took a look at the clothes and thanked the fan for them. He then asked the fan if he was going to be coming to the match. He promised to be there. Moreover, he also added that he’d be bringing his entire family along to witness the fighter in action.

The undisputed lightweight champion recently announced that he is ready to vacate his WBA, IBF, and WBO belts at 135 pounds. Haney’s decision to vacate all his titles can be a major one. Let us have a look at what it might mean for the other boxers in the division.

How will Haney’s vacating titles affect the rest?

Shakur Stevenson has just become a three-division world champion and now holds the WBC lightweight title with an impressive record of 21-0. Although his recent victory against Edwin De Los Santos was a bit controversial due to his careful approach, denying his incredible achievement would be unfair. On the other hand, Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who has a perfect record of 29-0, holds the WBA lightweight title.

With Devin Haney’s decision to vacate his lightweight belts, Davis is likely to be elevated to full champion, leaving the IBF belt vacant. Talks are in progress for a 2024 bout between former champions Kambosos and Lomachenko. The future of the WBO lightweight title is uncertain, with Lomachenko, the current number one contender, potentially tied up with the Kambosos fight.
