In a surprising twist, young boxing sensation Ryan Garcia has decided to bypass a potential bout with Devin Haney. Instead, he has set his sights on facing the flashy WBA titleholder, Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero. Garcia’s choice pivots on the belief that a clash with Romero promises “bigger business.”
Garcia’s decision speaks volumes about the current state of the boxing landscape. Recent figures reveal that Haney’s last PPV outing against Regis Prograis barely touched 50K views on DAZN. Given such lackluster numbers, Garcia perceives a bout with Haney as more of a charitable gesture. This move has shocked the boxing world, however, even his promoter Oscar De La Hoya was left stumped by this decision. Here’s what he has to say about the matter.

Oscar De La Hoya hints at external influence
Oscar De La Hoya recently commented on Ryan Garcia’s decision to pursue a fight with Rolly Romero over Devin Haney. De La Hoya expressed his surprise, saying, “I haven’t spoken to him whatsoever.” He further elaborated on the situation, hinting at external influences on Garcia’s choices: “He has an advisor and he has other people whispering in his ear.”
Oscar De La Hoya on Ryan Garcia changing his mind and wanting to fight Rolly Romero next instead of Devin Haney: “I haven’t spoken to him whatsoever. I don’t know exactly what’s happening with him and his team. He has an advisor and he has other people whispering in his ear. I’m…

This indicates that Garcia’s team might be playing a role in steering his decisions. Interestingly, ‘The Golden Boy’ revealed that his earlier directive was clear-cut: “Oscar, get me Haney.” Despite the evolving situation, De La Hoya remains open to communication, stating, “I’m here whenever he wants to talk.” De La Hoya might just be pointing at Floyd Mayweather’s influence on Garcia’s decision. The two have been very close recently. So is Garcia never going to fight Haney?
Ryan Garcia wants to hold off Haney’s fight for now
When Romero posted the fight poster online, the boxing world buzzed with anticipation. Garcia clarified his choice, saying, “After what happens to Rollies, the dev fight will be there and even bigger. Everyone critiquing now. Will end up seeing it was a better move.” This suggests Garcia sees a future face-off with Haney as a colossal event.

Facing some skepticism, Garcia stands firm. He even proposed a bout for Haney in the meantime, suggesting a match with Richardson Hitchins. With conviction, Garcia remarked, “Plus he can go fight Richardson Hitchens. Go do your 30k PPV buys. I don’t need you dev you need me.” Garcia wrote a rather bold statement as he announced a switch of opponents for his fans.
