Leonard Ellerbe advises Jermell Charlo to “come out early” against “slick” Canelo Alvarez
Since Canelo is a resilient fighter with excellent defense, it is imperative that Charlo comes out early and establishes respect. In Ellerbe’s opinion, going up against Alvarez, Charlo must establish the fact that he’s the boss in the ring. “I think that he has to establish respect early. I think he has to establish, by coming out early, [the fact that] he’s the boss,” said Ellerbe. In this context, he also mentioned that Alvarez impressed him with his slickness and style.
As per Ellerbe’s statements, Canelo reminds the CEO of a black fighter. In his opinion, Alvarez does not really have the typical Mexican boxing style. Instead, he is slick with “a lot of tricks in his bags“. “Canelo – he is a resilient fighter. An excellent defensive fighter. And one of the things that I’ve been really impressed by, and I have had the opportunity to say that [is] Canelo has a lot of tricks in his bags,” he said.
“He reminds me of a black fighter. I mean with his slickness. He doesn’t have the typical Mexican style that you see most Mexican fighters fight [with]. That has been very impressive to me,” Ellerbe added. While he praised Canelo’s slickness, he mentioned that Charlo had “that clutch gene“.
Ellerbe praises Charlo for rising to the occasion
While in Canelo, Ellerbe sees a black fighter who is “definitely” one of the “top two or three” defensive boxers in the sport, the CEO lauded Charlo for possessing “that clutch gene“. In his opinion, Charlo, who will have the support of every brother and sister, rises to the occasion.

“He’s slick but Charlo has that clutch gene. He knows [and] he steps it up when he has to step it up. And he rises to the occasion,” he said. “On this particular occasion, he’s got to come out and establish the respect early. Can’t wait,” Ellerbe added.
