Ahead of the fight with Canelo Alvarez, Derrick James, the trainer of Jermell Charlo, showed his faith in the fact that ‘Iron Man’ had a size advantage over the Mexican boxer. In his opinion, Charlo had to “maximize” his advantage against Alvarez and show people that he could be considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all time. Expecting a “back and forth” fight, while James believed Canelo would “impose his will,” he simultaneously instructed Charlo to prohibit his opponent from being “who you are” inside the ring.
During the fight, James reiterated himself and continuously advised Charlo to be more active. Besides screaming that ‘Iron Man’ had to “get off the ropes,” he forbade him to wait. “What are you waiting for? When he comes there, boom [hit]. We practiced that,” James told Charlo. In addition, the trainer asked his student “to open up” and “see the punches coming“. However, Charlo failed to follow James’ instructions and subsequently lost the fight. Although Charlo failed, Jamel Herring, the former junior lightweight champion, praised Derrick James for telling the American boxer exactly what he needed to do against Alvarez.

Fans and Jamel Herring praise Derrick James’ coaching in the wake of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo
Recently, Showtime released the “Epilogue” of Charlo vs. Alvarez. And like many, Herring “sat and watched” the episode. In his opinion, Derrick James “was telling Mell the truth in there, and what he needed to do.” After Herring shared his views via a tweet, several people joined him and defended Derrick James. According to one fan, James did everything he personally could. In their opinion, despite having height, arm length, and speed, Charlo could not execute the game plan.
James did what he could with what he had. Charlo had the physical advantages, height, arm length, speed but imo lacked the skills needed at that level to put it all together and execute the a game plan that heavily relied on those attributes.

Ahead of Charlo vs. Alvarez, Errol Spence Jr. faced Terence Crawford. At that time, James coached Spence Jr. too. As per one fan, James also told ‘The Truth’ exactly what he should have done against ‘Bud’. “Same with Spence, he told his fighters what to do but they didn’t follow the directions,” they added.
Same with Spence, he told his fighters what to do but they didn't follow the directions. I seem the video Charlo posted where he used defense and footwork to set up his shots but come fight night he became a track star

In another’s opinion, Jermell “just didn’t listen” to James. They believe once Charlo “realized he couldn’t win he chose to get through the fight safely“.
He really did! Mell just didn’t listen and realized he couldn’t win so he chose to get through the fight safely. Good business decision for him, bad for boxing fans and the sport as a whole. They should require anybody moving up to have a fight at that weight before a title shot.

Meanwhile, one claimed Charlo should have thrown 1000 punches to win!
He also told him that He didn’t need to throw 1000 punches but that was exactly what he needed to do to win

Finally, one thought although James “did the best,” Canelo was too much for Charlo to handle in the ring.
James did the best he could do canelo was just too much for Charlo
